Home Equity Loan
A home equity loan (also known as a secured loan or second charge mortgage) is simply a loan which is secured against the equity that you own in your property. Home equity loans are often available in larger amounts than personal loans, and are more achievable by borrowers with less than perfect credit ratings, which is why many people now use them as a means of obtaining the additional finance they need. However by securing a loan against your home you run the risk of having your property repossessed, should you not be able to meet the repayment terms.
What can a home equity loan be used for?
Home equity loans can be taken out for a variety of different purposes, most lenders are not strict on what the finance is put towards, providing it is for a legal purpose. Common uses of home equity loans are for home improvements, big one off purchases e.g. a wedding, consolidate debts and to purchase additional properties.
Advantages of home equity loans
- Lower rate of interest - You will normally pay a lower interest rate than with a personal loan because the loan is secured against your home.
- Longer repayment period - home loans may allow you to make payments over a longer time period, which can be helpful for budgeting.
- Borrow more – some home loan providers will allow you to borrow significantly more than is usually available via personal loan.
Find the best home equity deal
The amount you are likely to borrow, the amount of interest charged and the term of the loan is likely to depend on your personal circumstances, market conditions and the value of your property. Whilst there are a number of lenders offering competitive deals on home equity loans, the majority of these lenders only work through independent intermediaries.
We work with the majority of UK home equity loan lenders, which means we can compare leading and exclusive home equity loan deals to offer you the best loan to suit your personal circumstances. In addition to this, we can give unbiased, expert advice and help you through all stages of the application process and beyond this.
